1. Uutela recreational area

Just a 10-minute walk from the Vuosaari metro station, behind the splendid Aurinkolahti swimming beach, Uutela is a natural recreational area with a fine shoreline and forests. The meadows were once grazed by the sculptured cows of artist Miina Äkkijyrkkä. Uutela is a suitably urban nature experience.

2. Kivinokka

Kivinokka is a quiet place where traditionally workers would tend to their allotment gardens. It has a swimming beach and cool art kiosk, where I’ve seen sheep and chickens! This is where the classic Finnish dance band Dallape would entertain the workers from the Sörnäinen and Herttoniemi districts. Kivinokka can be found between the Kulosaari and Herttoniemi metro stations. Remember not to disturb the locals in their summer huts!

3. Lammassaari

Jump on the tram to Arabia and thenfollow the coastline to the Old Town Bay (Vanhankaupunginlahti), which usually people fish. Continue onwards through Viikki and across the duckboards to the island of Lammasaari, where you can climb to the top of the birdwatching tower and admire the view!
