Best Of Helsinki: Eat And Drink in Kallio

The genuine and life-filled feeling of Kallio is Helsinki at its purest. Built as a working class neighbourhood, this legendary district lives on in stories of decadence – nowadays profiled as the go-to spot for students, artists, young adults, and coloured by different alternative scenes and genuine Helsinkians. Kallio is packed with bars, cafés and small street level shops. Here are the tips for the area's best restaurants and cafés.

ALPPITORI

The sister joint of Punavuori's Tori restaurant, this laid-back restaurant also serves the legendary Tori meatballs with a brandy sauce, as well as many vegetarian alternatives. AlppiTori is right next to the House of Culture, and more precisely found in the Alppila district lining Kallio.

BEAR PARK CAFE & KULMA

This old-time kiosk with its lively terrace in the Karhupuisto park (Bear Park) is one of the city's most beloved old kiosks. Bear Park Cafe was opened in the summer of 2002 as a small summertime pop up, and opened as a kiosk the year after. Since then it has become a true gay icon, saluting Helsinki's LGBTI community for 14 years already - rain or shine.

Bear Park Cafe opened a street corner café in fall 2009 in the corner of Agricolankatu and Kaarlenkatu. The corner café has become a meeting point for all kinds of people - young, old, gay, whatever!
