Vilma Kesänen

Vilma Kesänen is a professional basketball player, representing Finland in the women's national team as well playing in Spain's main league for Star Center UniFerrol. Before heading back to Spain at the end of August, Vilma will spend the whole summer in Finland playing for the women's national basketball team and enjoying summer in her hometown.

I spend most of my summer on the basketball courts, indoors or outdoors. The hottest street basketball games take place at the court in Hietsu (Hietaniemi Beach), where the feeling is always great. Open and laid-back, proper games, and a cooling dip in the sea afterwards. Also suitable for onlookers. Another favourite court is by the Swimming Stadium. Also here the court fills up in good weather. On a rainy day, I'll head to the Töölö Sports Hall to work up a good sweat in a great atmosphere. The Sports Hall is a classic and a second home for the ToPo girls.

SOUTHERN HELSINKI (Punavuori, Ullanlinna, Kaivopuisto, Eira)

This is my ultimate summer neighbourhood! The beautiful streets on the southern side of the city are dotted with lovely street level shops and cafés to stroll through for the whole day. A new favourite is the interior design shop and café Plootu at the corner of Iso-Roobertinkatu and Fredrikinkatu. An older friend is found on Iso-Roobertinkatu: Street Gastro, a saviour when you're hungry and in a hurry to eat something. The park outside St. John's Church is a great stop to take a breather and enjoy the beauty of the city. Viiskulma is a dear street corner and a pitstop on the way to Kaivopuisto, a park with everything you can ask for on a summer day: jogging routes in spectacular scenery, the Eira basketball court with a view of the sea, a boat ride to the little islet of Liuskaluoto to enjoy pizza at Skiffer, and an ice cream from the Helsingin jäätelötehdas stand on the way back - super.

Konepajan Bruno The old railway workshop is the perfect mix of rough and chilled-out. The laid-back summer terrace works well and the great feeling continues indoors where you can lounge on the sofas or shake around to good music. The Cuban Sandwich from one of the food trucks inside gets a definite thumbs-up from me!

Palmtrees, sea, sun, good food, laid-back music, deck chairs and sand between your toes, what else can you ask for? Like taking a holiday abroad without leaving the lovely city of Helsinki, I love it!

You can't have a summer without ice cream, and Jädelino in the Abattoir yard has super good ones. They do Italian artisanal ice cream in many delicious flavours. Yummy! The Abattoir area is well worth a visit even just for the ice cream, but also otherwise. It's a great place to spend a summer day, either having a picnic, barbecuing with friends or in one of the restaurants and terraces around the yard.
