John Webster

John Webster is a Finnish documentary filmmaker and the chairman of the DocPoint – Helsinki Documentary Film Festival board. This January, his latest film Little Yellow Boots premieres at DocPoint. It is a cinematic letter to his great-grandchild, a girl called Dorit who will be born in the 2060’s, and whose little yellow boots will walk on a very different shoreline to the one we knew.

"As a film maker and photographer, it’s all about the view. Whether it’s the grand vista of a city, the thrill of not knowing what lies around the next corner, or quietly observing the locals going about their daily lives, it’s these mental snapshots that I enjoy most about any city I visit. And if you can take in a view with a nice meal or a glass in your hand - all the better!

South Harbour, Market Square, Kaivopuisto Park, Löyly

The heart of Helsinki is its old harbour, and there is no better way to see it than approaching it by sea. You can easily experience this from the Suomenlinna ferry.

Another way to see the harbour is to take a walk (4 km) from the Market square all around the southern coast as far as Löyly. This walk takes in views of the old harbour, sea and outer islands, Kaivopuisto park and the Art Nouveau / Jugend facades of Ullanlinna. Along the way you can pause at the Ursula and Carusel cafes, and end your walk with a sauna and meal at Löyly - or just lounging with a drink in one of their comfy deck chairs watching the ships go by.

Top of the steps of Helsinki Cathedral

Great view of the Senate square, market place and harbour. From early spring you’ll see light-starved locals sitting on the steps soaking up the first warming rays of the sun, and throughout the warmer months these steps are seldom empty.
