Climate Confessional – Ilmastotunnustusmajakka (Climate confessional lighthouse) is an interactive installation that serves as its users’ instrument for processing the climate crisis.

Climate Confessional – Ilmastotunnustusmajakka (Climate confessional lighthouse) is an interactive installation that serves as its users’ instrument for processing the climate crisis.

The spatial part of the work consists of a steel-structured tower that rises as a landmark reminiscent of an ancient ritual site and invites people inside for confession.

The hardware of the work recognises the user’s voice and converts it into text to form an anonymous confession. The controller inside the recording panel then sends the text to a website and the projection surface near the work, where the confession is displayed for all to see. Climate Confessional offers visitors the chance to confess their own everyday impacts on the climate: making a confession personally in your own voice and sharing it makes you think about the issue.

The installation was designed by Eetu Enqvist and Nino Hynninen from the design studio Paja&Bureau. The work was realised in collaboration with Henri Kotkanen from the Brains On Art art and science collective.

The work is part of the Helsinki Biennial Inspired series. Helsinki Biennial is an international visual arts event that brings outstanding contemporary art to maritime Helsinki every two years. The first biennial will be held in Vallisaari from 12 June to 26 September 2021.
