The sound installation Kesä talven keskellä (Summer Amid Winter) is a part of The Routes of Helsinki – Keskusmetsä (Central Forest) installation, focused on urban nature in the 2020s. The Routes of Helsinki is a series of works started by media artist Mikko H. Haapoja in 2010. The series deals with the soundscape in the capital city of Finland. The Routes of Helsinki – Keskusmetsä (Central Forest) captures the song of nature in the ever-densifying Helsinki and encourages us to listen to the forest around us.

Mikko H. Haapoja (M.Mus.) is a media and sound artist from Helsinki. His works often focus on the line between natural and urban soundscapes. Throughout the 2010s, Haapoja captured the soundscape of Helsinki in his project The Routes of Helsinki, creating soundscape compositions, media art installations and multi-art performances. In his solo project, Unheard Landscapes, he plays electric bowed lyres and field recordings he has made in various parts of the world. Haapoja’s works have been broadcast by several EBU broadcasters and have been presented in Oslo and New York, as well as in Helsinki at the City Museum, the Music Centre, the City Hall and open urban spaces, including the metro platforms at the Central Railway Station.
