Café Barock at Universum: Leçons de Ténèbres
Instrumental and vocal music from the 16th–17th centuries and something in between
The Leçons de ténèbres are based on the Lamentations of Jeremiah in the Old Testament, which were read on the three days between Jesus' death and resurrection, three for each day.
François Couperin composed three "lessons" for Easter Wednesday, Maundy Thursday and Good Friday, but only three Leçons de Ténèbre completed for Wednesday have survived, which Couperin composed for two voices and continuo.
Each Latin verse is preceded by a melisma from the first letter of the Hebrew text. The work mourns the destruction of Jerusalem and is one of the most significant works of the French Baroque. In addition to "dark songs", the concert will include Couperin's gentle melancholy music from his series no.2 for viola da gamba and continuo.
