Chamber Choir Audite : Path of Miracles
Since its premiere in 2005, Joby Talbot's Path of Miracles has emerged as the focal point of a renaissance in a cappella choral music.
Since its premiere in 2005, Joby Talbot's Path of Miracles has emerged as the focal point of a renaissance in a cappella choral music.
For too long subsisting as a smaller-form genre, the choral world has seen Talbots work grow quickly from a cult piece among enthusiasts to a contemporary classic of the repertoire, leading the way in a recent trend toward epic, concert-length works for unaccompanied choir.
The piece takes us on the pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela. The broad stylistic and technical diversity displayed across the span of the piece echoes the multicultural libretto by Robert Dickinson. One feels the excitement of setting out on a transformative voyage in the primal glissando and chorus that open the work; the tedium of sun-baked expanses on the trail in the trudging ostinato figures later on; the joy of reaching the penultimate goal, and the bittersweetness of bidding farewell to companions and returning to everyday life.
