Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra: FRSO 95 Years

The twin brothers familiar from ancient Greek mythology represent different musical identities in Esa-Pekka Salonen’s diptych Gemini. Whereas Castor’s music is “hyperactive, noisy and extrovert”, that of Pollux is ritualistic and based on a mantra rhythm.

Audiences at the time did not know what to make of Shostakovich’s ninth Symphony: was it purely ironic, or could anyone really be having such fun right after the horrors of the First World War? By contrast, the evening’s solo works, the Sibelius Serenade and Lutosławski’s Partita, are the carvings of two ‘think-big’ composers. The season’s opening concert also heralds the 95th year of the Radio Orchestra (now the FRSO) founded in 1927.
