Ilta-Sanomat 90th Anniversary - Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow
Ilta-Sanomat was founded and implemented during one morning on February 29th, 1932. There was a rush. The political situation in Finland had tightened. The armed far right had gathered in the town of Mäntsälä and demanded the resignation of the government. There were weapons in Helsinki, and wild rumors were circulating. The Finnish newspaper Helsingin Sanomat, which was printed at night, was not able to tell about the stages of the Mäntsälä uprising quickly enough, so an evening edition, Ilta-Sanomat, was published.
The four-page Ilta-Sanomat initially appeared irregularly as needed. However, the experience was so good that from October 15th, 1932, Ilta-Sanomat began to be published six days a week. It became an independent afternoon newspaper on November 1st, 1949.
The first website of the magazine was opened on the Internet in 1996. In 1999, iltasanomat.fi already offered short news clips, online surveys, games and, of course, the opportunity to exchange opinions with other readers. Even then, the discussion on Ilta-Sanomat's page was moderated, as it still is. Today, readers can also find news and conversations on Facebook, Instagram and TikTok.
The jubilee exhibition focuses especially on the challenges and opportunities created by digitalisation and Internet over the last two decades. There is also a playful reflection on how the death of Bishop Henry by Lalli or the romantic affair of Emperor Alexander I and Ulla Möllersvärd would be told today.
