Linko plays contemporary folk music with influences from jazz and improvisation.

Linko plays contemporary folk music with influences from jazz and improvisation. The producer and the pianist, Timo Alakotila, is one of the most recognised Finnish composers and musicians in the international folk music scene. The music is mainly based on compositions of the singer, Maarit Saarenkunnas, whom Finnish Music Quarterly (05/2021) described “as a voice sparkling with thousands of tears”. The beautiful, naturally easy and playful sound of soprano saxophone is created by swedish-born Elias Frigård. Helsinki-based Heikki Saarenkunnas provides a tasteful and solid ground for the music with his double bass.

Värivarjo are guitarist/multi-instrumentalist Joni Vierre and accordionist/pianist Tommie Black-Roff. Their name, which translates as “Colour-Shadow” is named after the large and colourful rainbow sheets commonly used in group kid games. That feeling of wonder and sensory saturation is the goal. They bridge the divide between jazz and folk backgrounds through collaborative composition and improvisation. Värivarjo is a musical laboratory in which they test ideas, games and creative tool - the outcome isn’t always known from the outset, but the journey is what counts.
