Manga Opera "Nemuru Otoko"
The Japanese Manga cartoon is drawn on the opera stage as a Finnish-Japanese collaboration.
In honor of its 5th anniversary, Helsinki-based
Opera BOX will present a new opera created in collaboration with young composer Eetu Ranta-aho and Japanese manga artist Riyoko Ikeda. An opera based on Japanese comic book tradition will be performed at the Alexander Theater from
19th to 22nd of August.
The title role of the opera is performed by Japanese baritone Yoshitaka Murata and the female lead is the top soprano Helena Juntunen. The opera is directed by Ville Saukkonen, Artistic Director of Opera BOX, and conducted by Jonas
Ikeda, the pioneer of Japanese shōjomanga, or girl manga, has created an exciting world where battle scenes, fantasy characters and eternal love make
time travel. What is the story of Nemuru Otoko, the Sleeping Man, and why do young Prince Atsumori and the Pearl Princess have to experience the same tragedy over and over again? The story is based on true events in 12th-century Japan and gets a glorious realization in a performance that combines cartoon, video and dance in Opera BOX. In the orchestra, the composer's vision is
implemented by Japanese Traditional Instruments, an electric guitar and a classical orchestra. The opera is performed in the original language of the
libretto in Japanese and is subtitled in Finnish.
