Svante Gullichsen's exhibition "Hanging On" is an open story about self-discovery, the erosion of mental health and its reconstruction. The works consist of self-portraits taken by Gullichsen between 2015 and 2020.
The works deal with challenging themes through nature - how the pristine white winter landscape suddenly shatters, and the picture is filled with black smoke.
A significant part of the pictures were taken at the Gullichsen family's summer house in the Porvoo archipelago, some in the wilderness of Lapland or in abandoned mines, for example.
What the works have in common is a pervasive sense of isolation; they move in borderlands, often without other people. Emotions come across directly in the pictures, and the honesty of the pictures can sometimes feel raw. The prevailing nudity in the works reflects the feeling of the vulnerability of the human psyche in the midst of external forces.
The works combine mystery, natural forces, the struggle of light and shadow, and unnatural situations in a familiar Finnish forest landscape.
