The Helsinki Balalaika Orchestra
The Helsinki Balalaika Orchestra and DomraCocktail performs in Maunula House with a new program!
The doors of Maunula House will be opened at 17:30, the festive program will begin at 18.30.
In the first part of the concert the duo DomraCocktail with soloist Reetta Sironen will lead the audience on a musical journey around Europe. The domra is a three-stringed musical instrument, and the DomraCocktail duo's idea is to show this instrument's potential. Pentti Yrjänäinen, domra player and concertmaster of the Helsinki Balalaika Orchestra, created all arrangements.
In the second part of the Christmas concert, the Helsinki Balalaika Orchestra will delight its fans and curious audience with a new program of traditional music, Ukrainian folk, and popular songs. The traditional repertoire of the Helsinki Balalaika Orchestra consists of Russian and Slavic folk music and famous melodies.
The Helsinki Balalaika Orchestra was established in 1910. It is the second oldest orchestra of Russian folk instruments in the world. In the spring of 2022, the orchestra gave a big concert in support of Ukraine. The concert was held at Kulttuuritalo in Helsinki. The orchestra, which is more than a hundred years old, has performed in different parts of Finland and abroad. The orchestra has released several recordings of the music: the oldest recordings date back to 1929, and among the newest are CDs "Helsinki Balalaika Orchestra 100 years" (2012) and "Bellman and Balalaika" (2015).
