Baritone Tommi Hakala and pianist Marita Viitasalo present a dazzling lied program in middle of the dark late fall of Helsinki. Hugo Wolf, Franz Schubert, Richard Strauss, Toivo Kuula, and Jean Sibelius are among most celebrated masters of the small-scale drama, the amalgam of words and sounds. The Hakala & Viitasalo duo belongs in the small international elite of genre.

Marita Viitasalo has appeared as a lied pianist on the most notable stages of the world, among them the Carnegie Hall and Vienna Musikverein. Tommi Hakala is very much at home on the opera stage, but there he often focuses on roles serving his great skills as an interpreter of text. As an example, the current production of Richard Wagner’s Ring features Mr. Hakala as Wotan, the cycle’s great male protagonist.
