Somnium Ensemble will begin the autumn season 2021 on Joonas Kokkonen’s 100th birthday, 13.11. , also marking the beginning of Elisa Huovinen’s term as artistic director.

”There is no doubt I am a mystic, but I understand mysticism rather differently than people usually do. Mysticism is referred to as an obscure and strange concept. For me it means the opposite: seeing fundamentally, having a clear vision.” - Joonas Kokkonen (1921-1996)

A cappella works by one of the major figures of 20th Century Finnish Music will be heard together with pieces by 16th and 17th century masters Orlando di Lasso (1532-1594) and Dietrich Buxtehude (1637-1707). Organist Olli Saari will perform alongside Somnium Ensemble.

The concert is a journey to three different centuries and a celebration of their ways of answering eternal questions. Kokkonen’s music is laden with splendour of a kind, and with the joy and grace of childlike astonishment.
