Aili Ikonen & Jukka Perko: Klasstet – MalmiJazz
Apr 2, 2025 | 7:00 pm
Ala-Malmin tori 1, 00700 Helsinki
Singer Aili Ikonen & saxophonist Jukka Perko’s new ensemble interprets some of the most famous classical music with a jazz-infused touch!
The compositions, originally released as instrumental versions, are given new Finnish lyrics by artists such as Paleface, Mariska, Mikko Kuustonen and Kanerva Pasanen, one of the leading Finnish lyricists of the day.
In this programme, classic compositions familiar to many are given new life when well-known melodies from P. Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker, E. Grieg’s Peer Gynt, and J. Sibelius’ Valse Triste are combined with brand-new poetic lyrics. The songs take on entirely new nuances, which this fine jazz ensemble interprets in powerful ways.
Aili Ikonen is one of the country’s top singers and songwriters, known for her sensitive and skilful interpretations. The luminous artist’s career includes collaborations with various jazz combos, big band productions and Ella Fitzgerald interpretations. Ikonen is currently also known as a member of the Rajaton vocal ensemble. In 2024, Ikonen will have been a recording artist for 20 years. Ikonen also performs extensively with some of the top artists of our time.
Saxophonist Jukka Perko played his way to recognition in the jazz scene as a teenager, and by 1987, he had already been invited to join legendary trumpet player Dizzy Gillespie’s orchestra for his 70th-anniversary tour. Perko is known for his numerous successful ensembles and extensive repertoire as a guest soloist with big bands and symphony orchestras. Propelled by his brilliant technique and combining Finnish national characteristics with the jazz tradition, Perko has grown into one of the most important saxophonists of his generation.
