Becky & Doris, “Absurdistan” – Merja Hujo and Suvi Laine-Karsten
Apr 24 – May 17, 2025
Ala-Malmin tori 1, 00700 Helsinki
Visual artists Merja Hujo ja Suvi Laine-Karsten have set up an installation ensemble for Malmitalo Gallery that consists of paintings, drawings, assemblage art and a collection of objects.
Exhibition opening on Wednesday, April 23rd, from 5 to 7 PM. Welcome!
They have created an installation that presents an absurd world where imaginary beings Becky and Doris, standing frozen still, observe and experience the surrounding reality. They make their own world reality as a counterbalance to seemingly absurd world events. Even the most difficult experiences have been transformed into a bizarre and absurd form. Flowers, weird figures, the original patterns of drawing embody the state that easily evokes but preserves the meaning of the experience of a human being facing the helplessness and suffering (in front of today’s world events).
Merja Hujo is a painter who is always curious and eager to discover new methods of creation. In recent years, she has also been using a variety of techniques, such as drawing. Her art is characterised by intensity and an overall emotional atmosphere. The themes for her work often arise from observing the environment, the world, and humanity’s role within it. These observations are transformed into artworks in which the inner eye creates new meanings. She describes her artistic process as an adventure that never ends, and she throws herself into ideas that excite her with bold enthusiasm. Hujo is a long-standing, dedicated artist who, in addition to holding dozens of solo exhibitions, has also taken part in group exhibitions abroad. From 2001 to 2020, she also worked part-time and on a freelance basis as a teacher of painting and visual arts.
Suvi Laine-Karsten is a visual artist based in Helsinki, whose artistic expression is primarily focused on the visual arts. In her paintings, Suvi favours oil or acrylic paints, though she also enjoys working with mixed media. Her approach is expressive and intuitive, fully immersed in the creative process. While painting, Suvi follows colour, line, form, fleeting images, and subtle impressions, allowing them to guide her. The result is often a surprise even to the artist herself – though she also works with a clear sense of direction. Her work highlights themes of humanity and equality. For Suvi, art is about creating a connection between inner imagery and external reality. Her artworks, shaped by an intuitive process, act as reflective surfaces onto which she projects interpretations of the phenomena of the external world.
