Death and letting go are part of life. They are also central themes at the end of the church year and resonate with the atmosphere of November.

In contemplating these deeply human matters, music becomes a powerful source of comfort. Such is Requiem by Antonín Dvořák, performed in this concert. This rarely heard work stands alongside the more frequently performed requiems of Verdi and Brahms as a profound and consoling masterpiece. Its sorrow is tinged with gratitude.

A Requiem, or Mass for the Dead, is a Catholic liturgical service held in memory of the deceased. Many composers have set the text of the Mass to music, either in memory of specific individuals or in contemplation of their own mortality.

Joachim Linckelmann’s chamber orchestra arrangement makes it possible to present this work, originally written for a massive ensemble, with a smaller group. Chamber Choir Viva Vox embraced this opportunity in collaboration with the skilled musicians of the Cathedral Chamber Orchestra. The performance also includes organ to reinforce sections originally scored for a larger orchestra.
