Children’s literature has always been a genre well-suited for partnerships between authors and illustrators. In recent years, international book partnerships have also become increasingly common.
What draws children’s book creators to seek partnerships in other countries, and how do these enrich the books? Meet some of Sweden’s and Finland’s leading children’s book creators in a discussion about their books and cross-border partnerships.
Author Oskar Kroon made his debut with Mitt fönster mot rymden and collaborated with Finnish illustrator Jenny Lucander on Fakta om pappor. He’s also a member of the Swedish Academy for Children’s Books.
Illustrator Jenny Lucander made her children’s book debut with Singer, written by Katarina von Numers-Ekman. Lucander received the Nordic Council Children and Young People’s Literature Prize for the picture book Vi är lajon! together with author Jens Mattsson.
Marika Maijala debuted in children’s literature with Ruusun matka. Among Maijala’s international book partnerships are Miljoner biljoner julgubbar Hiroko Motai and Ivars tomrum with Isabella Nilsson.
Kristina Sigunsdotter made her breakthrough as a children’s book author with Humlan Hanssons hemligheter. Sigunsdotter is also a member of the Swedish Academy for Children’s Book.
