Henri Lappalainen: Kehä 1

“If you think about what you see the most of, being a resident of Helsinki is much more about Ring I than the sights in the city centre.
Putting the focus on Ring I (Kehä I) invites the viewer to look for the spirit of the city and different hues in the mundane. The paintings show Ring I in a variety of shades.
We live in an influx of images, especially in terms of digital images. With the help of a computer or smart device, you can browse an infinite number of images, each more interesting than the last. However, you may start to feel that an image that was brilliant at first sight starts to look flat if it is not relevant to your own life in any way. I am not saying that no one should enjoy images of the Alps, wild animals or other wonderful things, but my ring road paintings are, in a way, the opposite of them. They are markedly local, something that resonates with us, the people who live in the Helsinki region.”
