Laulun Valo festival: Lied in the 21st century – new stories, new paths, new audiences
Keval Shah, the lied lecturer at the Sibelius Academy, will give a lecture. After the lecture, the audience will have the opportunity to ask questions. The event will culminate in an demo teaching session, where Shah will teach a lied duo from Sibelius Academy.
Keval Shah is a renowned Lied pianist. He performs all over Europe, regularly collaborating with singers including Karita Mattila and Fleur Barron, and has recorded for labels including Deutsche Grammophon.
He is also an innovative curator, broadening the possibilities of the Lied recital through creative concert design, commissions and a global perspective on repertoire which takes into account more fully the Lied’s international reality.
In this lecture, which he has previously presented for institutions including the Hugo Wolf Akademie and the Royal Conservatoire of the The Hague, Keval explores the history of the Lied recital, using this as a starting point for exploring possible new paths for the genre’s future evolution.
Taking into account contemporary politics, societal change and global cultural trends, Keval presents a vision of the Lied as a symbol of the Zeitgeist: a site for the stories of the present.
