Laura Netzel – Stabat Mater

Apr 9, 2025 | 7:30 pm – 8:30 pm

Sammatintie 5, 00550 Helsinki

In this Easter time concert, the chamber choir Tampere Cappella will perform Stabat Mater by the Finnish-born Laura Netzel from 1890.

The concert will also feature the release of a recording of the work, which is Tampere Cappella’s first album and the world premiere recording of Netzel’s Stabat Mater.

Tampere Cappella has performed the work in recent years, and it has been described in the press as a powerful masterpiece. The hour-long piece for choir, soloists, and organ is undoubtedly one of the most significant 19th-century church music works in the Nordic countries.

Netzel was a pioneering female composer of her time and remained socially active throughout her life.

The concert will be conducted by Markus Yli-Jokipii, with organist Riikka Viljakainen performing on the organ.

The vocal soloists are soprano Anu Mattila, alto Minna Raassina, tenor Taavi Niinimaa, and bass Sampo Haapaniemi.
