Art Exhibition: “Through the facets of m/y eyes I have no unitary vision of your body” by Liisa Mudist

The self-portrait painting series explores the act of seeing and the unstable relationship between the viewer and the viewed.

“i choose a photo that shows me how i see myself. how i perceive my soul to be. i choose the photo and copy that which was a moment i will never get back. but through painting it, i re-live this impossibility. re-live this little piece of a second, the moment gone forever. by painting the photo, i am not a human but first a copying machine. i don’t think. i don’t feel. i barely breathe. i concentrate on copying the photo as i feel it to be.”

The series focuses on the act of seeing and the unstable relationship between the one who looks and the one who is looked at, especially when both positions belong to the same person.

The works consider how the seen image becomes part of the observer, folding back into the self, while at the same time generating friction: a subtle tension between inner perception, external image, and the fragmented, multiple self that emerges in between.

Liisa Mudist (they/he) is an Estonian artist working with painting, poetry, and literary and art criticism.
