Rubik 80/50 – Fifty Years of Magic

Jan 17 – Feb 21, 2025

Kaisaniemenkatu 10, 00100 Helsinki

The Rubik 80/50 exhibition celebrates two major milestones: the 50th anniversary of the iconic Rubik’s Cube and the 80th birthday of its creator, Ernő Rubik.

Originating from a geometric model, the Rubik’s Cube has fascinated generations. It evolved from a simple teaching tool at The Budapest College of Art and Design (Iparművészeti Főiskola), which was the predecessor of Moholy-Nagy University of Fine Arts (MOME) in Budapest, into a global symbol of logic and creativity.

The exhibition at the Liszt Institute’s Gallery U explores the cultural impact of the cube and invites visitors to interactively explore Rubik’s innovations and the playful power of design. The exhibition has been designed by current and former MOME students. The installation’s sections, constructed from cubes and using their colour palette, provide lesser-known but relevant and interesting information about Ernő Rubik, while highlighting scientific and pop-cultural references to the cube.

The installation, which premiered in Tokyo in autumn 2024, will arrive in Helsinki directly after the exhibition in New York, where it will offer a new perspective on Rubik’s legacy and MOME’s role as an inspiration for future creatives.

Welcome to learn and experience the magic of the cube over fifty years!

The exhibition is produced by the Moholy-Nagy University of the Arts. The exhibition concept was developed by Professor Balázs Püspök, Director of the MOME Academy. The installation was designed during the Rubik 50 course at MOME, taught by lecturer Zsuzsanna Kiss-Gál, PhD student, assistant professor Dániel Lakos, curator Zsanett Lépold and Balázs Püspök.
