Syvyyksien äänet concert

May 10, 2025 | 7:00 pm – 8:00 pm

Pihlajatie 16, 00270 Helsinki

In the concert by the male choir Valkia and Seim Ensemble you’ll hear new and old music, whose deep themes include prayers for the surviving anguish and hope for better times. The concert will feature Arvo Pärti’s De profundis, Leevi Madetoja’s Elegia and Cecilia Damström’s Sailing to Windward. Additionally, the program also includes works from the Baltic region that reflect on the wounds of war-torn communities and, at the same time, the possibility of a new beginning. The pieces are accompanied by Renaissance-era gems from Purcel, Victoria and Bird.

Pärti’s De profundis is composed to the famous penitential Psalm 130, in which a person cries out to the Lord from the depths. The music creates a meditative, slow movement that gradually rises upward, growing into grand harmonies. Madetoja’s Elegia is a deep exploration of transience and inner exhaustion – a poem in which the individual accepts the limits of life and finally finds peace. Damström’s Sailing to Windward concludes the concert with a comforting thought of better times: differences and disagreements can be overcome through understanding and every beautiful word.
