TASO: Echoes of the North
May 10, 2025 | 7:00 pm – 8:30 pm
Lutherinkatu 3, 00100 Helsinki
Tampere Academic Symphony Orchestra TASO`s spring concert tour will feature romantic music by Finnish composers from the early 20th century.
The first half of the concert will feature Jean Sibelius’ Violin Concerto, one of the most demanding works in major violin repertoire, interpreted by violinist Iidamari Ahonen. She has been successful in violin competitions both in Finland and abroad. She is currently studying violin at the Berlin University of the Arts and the Sibelius Academy.
The second half of the concert opens with Leevi Madetoja’s The Ostrobothnians Suite, op. 52. While the opera Ostrobothnians has become the national opera of the Finns, the orchestral suite adapted from it has also achieved its place in Madetoja’s production.
The orchestral suite includes five movements: Open Plain (Lakeus), Song of the Prisoner (Vangin laulu), Ruffians (Häjyt), Entrance Music (Tulopeli) and Leaps and Jumps (Hypyt). Each of these movements has its own character, depicting Finnish culture.
The concert concludes with one of Jean Sibelius’ most popular works, Satu, op. 9, which has been considered a classic example of the composer’s skillful use of the orchestra.
