Uljas Kaitala and Heikki Korkala: Extended Spaces

Nov 8 – 29, 2025

HAA Gallery

Suomenlinna C 1, 00190 Helsinki

The exhibition is built around works of art that occur in the moment, exploring the boundaries between performing arts and audiovisual art.

“Extended spaces” is the third exhibition by the “Why? The bird.” collective. In the exhibitions, we deal with existential themes in hypermodern times. The exhibitions are ensembles.

Everything starts from the body and expands from there into the surrounding space. What is the relationship between the body, mind and technology? In what ways can the mind and body experience spatiality? What kind of spaces do one spend time in?

The practice could be compared to Free jazz improvisation. People prepare with thoughts and tools, but the art itself is created in the gallery space, intertwined with a specific time and place. The space becomes part of the process as an active actor. The actions that take place there are documented and reflected back into the space, which expands the spatial experience. Previous exhibition processes also form new layers.

People dig – it leaves behind cavities and chasms, works created in space and time, which connect to each other like caves. The goal is simply to get deeper.
