Votes For Women!
Dec 5 – 12, 2025
Hietaniemenkatu 7B, 00100 Helsinki
Many of the arguments against women voting seem absurd today – but things weren’t always quite so obvious to everyone. Votes For Women! is a collection of three one-act plays that were written by campaigners to reveal these absurdities with plenty of humour, wit and sarcasm.
Anti-suffrage Waxworks provides a very tongue-in-cheek introduction to the stereotypical characters that often appeared in the discourse of the time.
How the Vote Was Won asks what would happen if women really were to do as they’ve been told: to give up their jobs and careers, stay at home, and be supported by their male relatives.
Lady Geraldine’s Speech wonders whether the anti-suffragists might actually be converting more people to the cause than the campaigners themselves….
Although these plays date from 1909, there are some aspects of them that are sadly still relevant today in all manner of political discourse.
