Saaʹmi jieʹllempälggsest – On the Path of the Skolt Saami Life – Skolt Saami People and Saint Tryphon’s Living Heritage

The exhibition introduces history and present of Skolt Saami people, culture and language.

The Saami people (also Sámi or Sami) are an indigenous people inhabiting Sápmi, Saamiland, which today encompasses large northern parts of Norway, Sweden, Finland and the Kola Peninsula within the Murmansk Oblast of Russia.

The Skolt Saami is a small, yet impressive Saami minority. The colourful and close to nature culture of the Skolt Saami is a fascinating mixture of the Orthodox religion, decorative handicrafts, storytelling, and its very own Skolt Saami language.

The Skolt Saami have endured the northern conditions throughout history, thanks to their way of life that shows great respect for nature. The Sevettijärvi area in the Municipality of Inari is the only area in the world where the Skolt Saami language and culture is still a part of everyday life.
