Anybody's Architecture: Senate Square Stairs
Anybody's Architecture: Senate Square's Stairs is a dance piece for eight dancers in one of Finland's most beloved public spaces.
Anybody's Architecture: Senate Square's Stairs is a dance piece for eight dancers in one of Finland's most beloved public spaces. Above the 60-meter-wide and 46-step steep staircase rises the towering, white-shining Helsinki Cathedral representing neoclassicism. An impressive view opens from the stairs to the aesthetically uniform empire period surroundings of the Senate Square.
In this harmonious urban complex, you can find buildings designed for political power, science, culture, and spirituality. However, Senate Square and its staircase are an architectural environment related to the everyday activities of the town citizens. Anybody's Architecture: Senate Square Stairs is the seventh part of the choreographic series, where contemporary dance, architecture and live music meet.
The dance work is inspired by the architectural possibilities of movement, the relationship between the bodies of dancing people and the physical architecture outside them, as well as the history of the Senate Square stairs and its surroundings and the social nature of the place. The varied, clearly defined and smoothly progressing choreography from one scene to the next is in close interaction with the staircase and its surrounding architecture.
