FRSO with special guest Brett Dean
Brett Dean has chosen Sibelius’s Scene with Cranes as an introduction to his own Fire Music. He experiences the cranes’ mournful lament as a metaphor for both life and death. Fire Music was a reaction to the Australian bushfires in 2009. The Ariel alluded to in the title of his Clarinet Concerto is not the Shakespearean character but refers to a little girl who died of AIDS. Ariel’s Music was one of Dean’s first major works and won an award from the UNESCO International Rostrum of Composers.
