The Box & The Trial

The double bill of two chamber operas, The Box and The Trial, offers us two complementary perspectives of the unpredictability and
disconnectedness of life. It tells a story about people living in isolation from the surrounding society and, on the other hand, about people at the mercy of society. Both operas share the view of an absurd world, that can feel familiar to many of us these days.
The Box, a chamber opera composed by Stefanie Tuurna and written by Kalle Virtanen, tells the story of four men locked in the same room. The timely piece deals with the human mind by means of contemporary opera in a situation where
the outside world is excluded and the only way to escape can be found on one’s own head. In the performance, four soloists are accompanied by the Helsinki Chamber Orchestra, conducted by James Kahane.

The Trial takes on big issues in life and touches the audience. The chamber opera offers a recognizable vision of the essential absurdity of our world. The Trial, premiered in December 2019 by Finnish Chamber Opera, is based on Franz
Kafka’s famous novel Der Prozess, which was left unfinished. The chamber opera is a profane and macabre performance that is itself incomplete and unstable, like the world of Josef K, the famous protagonist of Kafka. We follow a strange
theatre in a theatre, that is like a rehearsal of performance, that does not seem to answer the questions that it sets. Josef K sticks to his frantic role because he no longer wants to wake up to his nightmare. The story of Josef K is told from a point of view of an insect and it highlights the haphazardness of life, the uses and abuses of power, sexuality, and love.
