AIKA KUVIA – vibrant suburban life in Vuosaari
The exhibition examines the emergence of the distinctive suburban life in Vuosaari – residential houses, shopping centres and leisure venues being built as part of the era of concrete suburbs.
The exhibition examines the emergence of the distinctive suburban life in Vuosaari – residential houses, shopping centres and leisure venues being built as part of the era of concrete suburbs.
The pictures show the incomplete and unfinished nature of suburban life – among newly completed apartment buildings, there are Saseka Oy's sand pits and industrial buildings, as well as wasteland and nature for children to play in. Alongside wall-like houses, state-of-the-art concrete constructions emerge.
People look happy and proud of their sparkling new suburb, even if it’s half-finished. They meet acquaintances at the shopping centres, visit the biggest supermarket in Finland, go see Santa Claus and reindeer and talk to politicians on the campaign trail. Bread and circuses are also offered in the form of Helsinki’s first suburban market with cafés and entertainment provided by a touring carnival.
The exhibition is open during Vuotalo’s opening hours.
