Baroque in the Low Lands - Music from the United Provinces of the Netherlands 1588–1795

Baroque in the Low Lands - Music from the United Provinces of the Netherlands 1588–1795. Concert in Meilahti Church on 27 April 2023.

It was due to the good prospects in financial prosperity and the relatively stable and pragmatic attitude towards equal rights, that not only asylum seekers and ambitious entrepreneurs, but also countless artists were drawn to the Low Countries during the 17th century. Such artists brought in their versatile ideas and artistic styles from their lands of origin. The Republic of the Seven United Netherlands was stylistically a Europe in small-scale – only that, within its borders, Italian, French, German and English styles flourished side by side. This concert presents a versatile range of Baroque music, starting with works influenced by the Franco-Flemish School and by the virginalists, and ending at the efflorescence of the galant style. What kind of music would Rembrandt and Vermeer have heard? What about the 9-year-old Wolfgang Amadeus who dropped by in The Hague?
