In celebration of the 120th anniversary of the significant Finnish composer Helvi Leiviskä, Kokonainen ry is organizing two events focusing on her life
In celebration of the 120th anniversary of the significant Finnish composer Helvi Leiviskä, Kokonainen ry is organizing two events focusing on her life and music. The day consist of two events, the former starting at 12.00 and the latter starting at 16.00.
The day combines discussion and music. The midday program features pianists Tiina Karakorpi and Fanny Söderström, soprano Iida Antola and violinist Linda Suolahti. The initiation is held by musicologist Eila Tarasti who has written Helvi Leiviskä’s biography.
The later event starts with a discussion. Assistant professor Susanna Välimäki, PhD researcher and music journalist Markus Virtanen, musicologist Eila Tarasti and pianist Tiina Karakorpi are talking about Helvi Leiviskäs life and music. The festivities continue with Leiviskä's chamber music performed by Linda Suolahti, violin, Kati Raitinen, cello, Elina Heikkinen, viola, Fanny Söderström, piano and Tiina Karakorpi, piano.
Helvi Leiviskä (1902—1982) was the only Finnish female composer to continue the Sibelian symphony tradition. Leiviskä was a celebrated artist in Finland in her day, but her music still awaits its entry into the standard repertoire of concert life.
