Juurakko + Maija Kauhanen
Juurakko serves a delightful combination of Finnish and Afro-American roots music with vivid storytelling and rakish skiffle spirit.
Juurakko serves a delightful combination of Finnish and Afro-American roots music with vivid storytelling and rakish skiffle spirit. Highly skilled a cappella blues singing in Finnish is combined with exotic instruments like the kantele, the harmonium, the bowed lyre, the cigar box guitar, a coffee mug and a suitcase. The music of Juurakko invites to a waltz with an old sailor, takes to an island of unwanted people and brings earthy echoes from the Deep South. Juurakko was selected as the Artist of the Year at the Finnish Ethnogala 2020.
Maija Kauhanen is a fleet-fingered kantele virtuoso and one-woman band, who specializes in Finnish kantele and its old and rare playing techniques. Weaving together polyrhythms and organic beats she creates unique soundscapes and compelling grooves.
Maija Kauhanen is a composer and multi-instrumentalist as well as a charismatic performer with an entrancing stage presence. The rural music traditions of Finland and Karelia are her main inspiration and she deftly gives their time-honoured melodies a new life.
