In this Oscar-winning film that was inspired by Haruki Murakami’s short story, director and actor Yusuke Kafuku is still struggling to deal with his wife's death after two years.

He agrees to help his uncle Vanja get to the Hiroshima Theatre Festival and meets Misaki, a young introvert woman who has been hired as the director’s chauffeur. The red Saab 900 is the main stage for the film where hitherto hidden secrets gradually dissolve.

The film won the Academy Award for Best International Feature Film. It was also awarded the Golden Globe for Best Foreign Language Film.

Film historian Harri Kilpi, PhD, will provide an introduction to the film at 5 p.m.–5:45 p.m. After the lecture, the free screening of the film begins at 6 p.m. In the autumn, the theme of Kino Kuutamo’s screenings is films based on books. The film is based on Haruki Murakami’s short story “Drive My Car” (from the short story collection Men Without Women [Onna no inai otokotachi], 2014).

Free Mondays is a series of Monday-night free events at Kanneltalo. The events include gigs, author visits, films and sing-alongs. As the name suggests, no admission fee is collected for Free Mondays’ events that are open to all. Start your week with a dose of culture at Kanneltalo!
