Somnium Ensemble's Christmas Concert
Somnium Ensemble’s traditional Christmas concert includes both music from centuries ago and well-known Finnish Yuletide classics.
Somnium Ensemble’s traditional Christmas concert includes both music from centuries ago and well-known Finnish Yuletide classics. The Helsinki-based mixed choir is conducted by Elisa Huovinen.
The pieces by Herbert Howells, Jan Sandström and Fredrik Sixten are based on poetry from the 14th to 16th centuries, in which Virgin Mary appears as a mystic rose. The rose represents Mary, who bears new life, both earthly and heavenly, within her. Her bloom will be the Saviour of the World, but the rose also brings light to us now, in the midst of winter’s cold and dark.
Veni, veni Emmanuel and In dulci jubilo, two melodies from the Middle Ages, also carry the Christmas story in the concert. So do the exuberant motets by Orlando di Lasso, as well. Other composers include i.a. Madetoja, Kuula, Lauridsen, Paulus, Erkkilä, Sonninen.
