Museum tips for fans of design and architecture

The Design Museum is an internationally recognized national specialist museum of Finnish design. 
The history of Finnish design is presented in the museums collection exhibition through living narratives, using today's technology and digital applications.
The museum organizes eg. workshops and guided tours. 
There's also the Taito Cafe and the Design Shop museum shop. 
Free entrance to the Design evenings on every months last Tuesday at 17-20 (not during summer months).

2023: The Design Museum has free entry on the last Tuesday of every month all day, i.e. 11 am- 8 pm.

Design Museum

The Museum of Finnish Architecture offers rich new perspectives, discussion openers and meaningful experiences of architecture. The mission is to activate a personal connection with the built environment and provide tools for understanding architecture. The museum offers Finnish and international tourig exhibitions and a permanent exhibition on 19th Century Finnish Architecture. A bookshop, specialized public library and collections are also at your service. The museum organizes a great variety of events including visiting lectures, guided tours and workshops.
Free admission on the last Tuesday of every month.

Iittala &amp; Arabia Design Centre is a deep dive into two of Finland's most celebrated design and lifestyle brands, Iittala and Arabia. The centre invites you to explore your own creativity through workshops, guided tours, lectures and events. In the Design Lab Gallery, you'll find changing exhibitions, the Design Museum Arabia displays the history of Finnish ceramic art and glass design and the Iittala &amp; Arabia Design Centre Store is a haven for design lovers: in addition there is a cafe as well as the studios of the Arabia Art Department Society.

Iittala & Arabia Design Centre

Aino and Alvar Aalto designed for themselves a cosy, intimate building (compelted in 1936) for living and working in, using simple uncluttered materials. The house was divided into a workspace for Alvar Aalto's architectural firm and the couple's private residence. The office was located in this building until 1955.
The history and architecture of Aalto's unique home, located in Munkkiniemi area in Helsinki, opens up through the stories the guide has to share. The tour lasts an hour and includes both the guided tour itself and free time to enjoy the special atmosphere in the house and explore the museum shop.
Studio Aalto can only be visited by joining a guided tour. Pre-booking is recommended while tour capacity is max. 15 persons/tour.

Alvar Aalto designed the building at Tiilimäki 20 in Munkkiniemi as his own office in 1955. 
A visit to Studio Aalto is a fascinating immersion into the world of Aalto's architecture, design and personal history, but at the same time it is an architectural experience of space and the building itself. Bathed in natural light and decorated with Aalto furniture, this unique studio was the setting where Aalto and his architects designed a number of famous buildings.
Studio Aalto can only be visited by joining a guided tour. Pre-booking is recommended while tour capacity is max. 15 persons/tour.

The Didrichsen Art Museum is a unique combination of art museum and private home on Kuusisaari island in Helsinki. Temporary exhibitions and permanent displays of ancient Chinese and pre-Columbian artefacts. The building and its extension (1957 and 1964) was designed by architect Viljo Revell. Also a sculpture park by the sea, museum shop and small café.
