Kaikukatu 4, 00530 Helsinki
Soita da pajata! is Culture Cooperative Uulu’s new story concert that combines the Finnish and Karelian languages. The performance will take you on an adventure in a small village at Finland’s eastern border.
Julia, a girl from Helsinki visiting her second cousins, meets a Karelian-speaking old lady, or buabo, who tells the children exciting stories and riddles in Karelian. In the buabo’s cottage, we will also hear songs and get to dance and get acquainted with traditional instruments from the Karelian region. The story is built in such a way that it is understandable even if you have never heard the Karelian language before.
The concert will be highly participatory, and the audience will also get to try out some traditional instruments, dance and sing along. The performance will also teach the audience a little Karelian, and after the performance, the audience will receive a printout to help them learn some common Karelian expressions and words.
The concert will feature two performers. Musician and Programme Manager Petra Käppi will represent Culture Cooperative Uulu, and the other musician in the performance will be ethnomusicologist Sanna Mylläri, who is an expert of the Karelian language and Karelian instruments. Mylläri is working on a Karelian language revitalisation project at the University of Eastern Finland and speaks Karelian as her second home language.
Duration of the show: roughly 45 min
