Anna Morottaja aka Karhu-Pekan Anna is an Inari Saami musician from Inari, who sings livđe, joiks and sings.
Today, the Inari Saami community of less than a thousand people has its own musical tradition, livđe, which differs from the better-known North Saami joik. Like the Inari Saami language, livđe almost died out during the 20th century, but in the early 2000s, livđe recorded by Anna Morottaja’s great-aunt Anna Briitta Mattunen was found in the archives. Anna Morottaja explored them and released the first livđe album in history in 2022.
Livđe paints a portrait of a whole person, or sometimes an animal, through the use of sound rather than a narrative. The ‘Livđen lumo’ (Enchantment of livđe) concert programme consists mainly of livđe by Anna Briitta Mattunen, which are accompanied by stories about the people they are about. Traditionally, livđes are unaccompanied, but the extensive instrumental expertise of the members of Tallari and carefully considered arrangements support the traditional expression beautifully.
