J.S. Bach: St. Matthew Passion
Apr 3, 2026 | 5:00 pm – 8:30 pm
Unioninkatu 29, 00170 Helsinki
The renowned boys’ choir Cantores Minores of Helsinki Cathedral has become known as a performer of Bach’s great church music works. This traditional boys’ choir brings the St. Matthew Passion and the St. John Passion to concert audiences every year, which are undoubtedly among the richest treasures of classical music of all time.
This spring, it is the turn of the St. Matthew Passion, which the Cantores Minores will traditionally perform with the Finnish Baroque Orchestra on Good Friday. In addition to the regular performance date on Good Friday, the concert can be heard also in Temppeliaukio Church.
In this exceptional musical drama, multi-layered symbolism, the timbres of the singing and instruments, and skillful musical narration combine to create a powerful expression of the Easter Passion play. The first part of the passion is also sung by the Cantores Minores Educational Group Choir, coached by Anna Hurmeen and Timo Pihkanen.
In addition to Cantores Minores and Finnish Baroque Orchestra, the concert will feature soloists Tuomas Katajala (evangelist and tenor), Jyrki Korhonen (Jesus), Tuuli Takala (soprano), Jeni Packalén (alto) and Aarne Pelkonen (bass). The concert will be conducted by Professor Hannu Norjanen.
