7 feel-good things to do in Herttoniemi
Quiet yet lively, green yet surprisingly varied; this East Helsinki neighbourhood is where city life truly finds its balance. From fairytale-like forest trails to seaside sunsets, historic curiosities, and fantastic sports opportunities, here are 7 must-dos in Herttoniemi.
1: Stroll along the seaside
One of the best things to do in Herttoniemi is enjoying its nature; Herttoniemenranta is where the outdoorsy locals come alive. Take a crispy morning walk along the shore or go for a swim in Tuorinniemi: a sandy beach in summer, a maintained ice swim spot in winter – see photo below! Part of Helsinki’s unique 130-kilometre-long public waterfront trail, the Eastern Waterfront Trail goes right through Herttoniemenranta (Herttoniemi Beach).

2. Track trails, birds and beaches
If Herttoniemenranta isn’t enough nature for you, head to Kivinokka. Part nature reserve, Kivinokka is ideal for day treks, wildlife discovery, and the perfect sunset. With a self-service canoeing station, two public beaches, a birdwatching platform, fishing opportunities, and ancient glacial potholes (“hiidenkirnut” in Finnish), you won’t run out of wonders. Out of office. Into nature.

3. Daydream of cottage life
One of Helsinki’s nine allotment gardens, Herttoniemen siirtolapuutarha is like a small village. Tiny wooden cottages, neat vegetable plots, and fragrant flowers create an enchanting escape. In summer, meet locals enjoying their unique city-country lifestyle. In winter, discover quiet blankets of snow, with maybe a few romantics braving a cup of coffee in their sleeping garden.

4. Step back in time
Soak in history at Herttoniemi Manor, one of Helsinki’s oldest manor houses from the 18th century. The Manor Museum delves into the estate’s fascinating story, including the lesser-known Knusback farm, which stands right in the back garden. The elegant manor park, dotted with ponds and winding paths, feels like stepping into a storybook. Victorian cosplay, anyone?

5. Have a picnic under the cherry blossoms
Springtime is hanami season in Roihuvuori Cherry Park. Cherry blossoms turn the park into a pink cloud, drawing families, photographers, and wanderers together for a festival. Outside Instagram-worthy blossoms, Roihuvuori Park is perfect for summer picnics, autumn foliage (“ruska” in Finnish), or winter strolls – a 50+ metre-high water tower in the middle adds to the unique atmosphere.

6. Sweat it out like a local
Herttoniemi, like all of Helsinki, takes sports seriously. Its 1930s ski jumping hill is Finland’s southernmost, and still active. The neighbourhood is also home to a popular outdoor gym, fitness stairs surrounded by forest, and a sports centre perfect for trying anything from indoor volleyball to padel. Winter or summer, the locals keep moving!

7. Eat, sip and people-watch
All that exploring builds an appetite, and Herttoniemi restaurants deliver. Head to Treffi Pub & Bistro, one of the area’s best-known spots for comfort food; Wanha Mylly, a historic mill restaurant adjoining the Herttoniemi Manor; Way Bakery, a classic Helsinkian café known for its delicious Nordic breakfast; or Bella Marina, a seasonal restaurant with a seaside view – or dozens of small restaurants offering food from all around the world.
Psst! If you’re looking for classic Finnish souvenirs, head to the Marimekko Outlet in the industrial Herttoniemi, near the metro station.
