Sep 25 – Oct 17, 2026

Cable Factory

Kaapeliaukio 3, 00180 Helsinki

The exhibition explores the history of the commercial internet in Finland from 1996 to 2026. It combines a retrospective with media art.

It brings together pioneers of the field, retro phenomena and media art, guiding visitors through the turning points of the internet and digital culture: from the technology boom of the 1990s to the dawn of the mobile era, the early days of social media and the future of the internet shaped by artificial intelligence.

Visitors can delve into the turning points of the internet and digital culture through interactive and immersive media artworks that explore the internet as a phenomenon, as well as works reflecting the history of the field and contemporary interviews.

On display are video art, interactive and participatory media artworks, and an interactive sculpture that speculates on the future of the internet by Roberto Fusco, Calvin Guillot, Merle Karp and xyny.

This retrospective features, amongst other things, an immersive 1990s workstation, retro equipment and video interviews with Finnish pioneers of the digital sector.

The exhibition has been curated by Samuli Hokkanen, Olli Maksimainen, Jani Ruotsalainen and Jussi Salolainen.
