Tres alae – Concert

The Tres alae concert pays tribute to and highlights Amos Anderson’s own fascination with devotional songs and medieval music, while also bringing contemporary nuances to this rich musical heritage.

Amos Anderson developed a keen interest in the Middle Ages, the Bridgettine Order, and the Convent of Naantali in the 1920s. Over the following decades, he played an active role in bringing attention to the cultural heritage associated with Saint Bridget of Sweden and the nuns of the Convent of Naantali, helping to strengthen its significance and public recognition.

Among other contributions, he financed the restoration of Naantali Church and wrote the play Vallis Gratiae. He also regularly published articles on the Bridgettines and medieval history in the newspaper Hufvudstadsbladet, which he owned. It is likely that the private chapel he had built on Yrjönkatu was likewise inspired by Naantali and its monastic heritage.

The concert features four pieces from Cantus sororum, a collection of devotional songs created by Saint Bridget of Sweden (1303–1373) and Petrus Olavi of Skänninge (1298–1378). The arrangements by musicians Iida Hirvola and Helena Holm take considerable artistic liberties with traditional monastic singing practices, including the use of instruments.
