Finnish Engineers’ Association Building
Ratakatu 9, 00120 Helsinki
Punavuori
Designed by Alvar Aalto, this red brick building was completed in 1951 for Suomalaisten Teknikkojen Seura, the Finnish engineers’ association. With its long horizontal windows and restrained modernist form, it stands out among the neighbouring Art Nouveau architecture. Aalto’s own architectural practice was based here for a period before moving to the Munkkiniemi studio in 1955. The building also housed a theatre, cinema and television studios, including a 1967 television appearance by the Jimi Hendrix Experience. In 2022 the upper floors were converted into apartments, while the facade and original interior details were carefully preserved.
