For the featured composer Hector Berlioz, music was a realm of boundless possibilities, and with its delirious romance, bloodcurdling spectacle and orchestral witchcraft, his opium-fuelled Symphonie Fantastique certainly earns its name! 

But the events of the twentieth century exceeded even the darkest imaginings, and Martinu’s devastating sonic war memorial and Bloch’s impassioned love-letter to his Jewish heritage complete this powerful programme from cellist Pablo Ferrandez and guest conductor Stanislav Kochanovsky.
