7 Helsinki archipelago experiences for business events
With an archipelago of 327 islands and 131 kilometres of shoreline, Helsinki brings the sea, nature and a little adventure within minutes of the conference room.
Congress destinations tend to keep delegates and nature at a distance. Helsinki doesn’t. It can’t – many venues are a five-minute walk away from the sea. In fact, around 70 percent of Helsinki’s total area is sea, making it one of Europe’s most water defined capitals.
For event organisers, the key point is that the archipelago begins in the city centre. An excursion isn’t a full day trip and fits nicely into an afternoon. Options range from private activities for groups of 10–30 to cruises and venues for more than 200. Capacities and timings can often be tailored, so ask providers what works for your group.
1. Go from conference room to sauna
Sauna is the Finnish experience. A year-round must in Helsinki, paired with a dip in the sea. Nature, steam at your fingertips. Both mixed and separate sessions can be arranged for private bookings. At Lapinlahden Lähde, the bookable sauna is on historic former hospital grounds. Löyly’s distinctive wooden architecture houses public and private saunas and a waterfront restaurant. In summer, Lonna’s public island sauna adds a 10-minute ferry journey. Further east, Villa Furuvik offers both private beach-sauna facilities and a small garden venue with sauna. Just offshore, Uunisaari’s two saunas accommodate up to 25 people and can be booked privately – so too its restaurant.
- Best for: relaxation and local culture
- When: year-round; Lonna in summer
- Allow: 2–3 hours

2. Cruise into dinner
Boating is a big part of Helsinki life. So, a boat needn’t just take delegates to dinner. It can host dinner too. Depending on the route, boats pass Suomenlinna, Helsinki’s icebreaker fleet and islands lined with historic villas and restaurants. Stromma, SunLines and Nordic Swan can tailor cruises to suit the group, menu and schedule. Most dinner and sightseeing cruises operate from spring to autumn. Something exclusive? Helsinki Boats offers tailor-made luxury cruises and corporate charters.
- Best for: dining and sightseeing
- When: mainly May–September
- Allow: 2–4 hours
3. Float into the Finnish winter
Winter in Helsinki doesn’t mean remaining idle. Want proof? Bob about in the sea – with proper equipment and guides at hand. Survival suits keep you warm, dry, afloat and very relaxed. Really. M/Y Fortune’s ice-floating and sauna cruise takes up to 12 and Redrib offers ice floating for up to 70 people. Burnout City and Redrib run separate hovercraft tours across water and ice, and guided Nordic skating takes groups onto natural ice when conditions allow.
- Best for: action and team bonding
- When: winter, subject to conditions
- Allow: 3–4 hours

4. Borrow an island for the day
Experience an island in isolation – a very Helsinkian thing. A short boat journey to Saunasaari’s Sauna & Dine. Think a half-day of traditional smoke saunas, sea views and dining. Arrive, unwind, eat, cast off again. Redrib offers your own private island for swimming, sunbathing, barbecue, or catered meals. Sunset ride back, too. Helsinkians don’t mind sharing their islands with visitors either. UNESCO-listed Suomenlinna, 15 minutes by ferry year-round from Market Square, trades privacy for scale: historic venues built for anything from an intimate occasion to a full gala dinner.
- Best for: retreats, dining and celebrations
- When: spring–autumn
- Allow: 4–6 hours
5. See the city from kayak level
Exercising in nature. Paddling is a popular pastime here. Come down to water level as your guided group passes urban shorelines, islands and bays. Sunset and near-midnight summer tours come with their own light show. Vuosaari Paddling Center has guided tours for groups, including beginners. Laguuni offers guided kayaking picnics, grilling and Baltic Sea Plogging tours, collecting litter while paddling. Come winter, Natura Viva guides kayaks around the eastern Helsinki archipelago.
- Best for: active teams and small groups
- When: year-round with specialist guidance
- Allow: 2–4 hours
6. See contemporary art offshore
Some cities keep contemporary art in galleries. Helsinki also puts it on an island. Helsinki Biennial brings art to Vallisaari, 20 minutes from Market Square by ferry. Add a walk through Vallisaari’s former fortifications and refreshments. A half-day programme, easily.
- Best for: culture and conversation
- When: biennial summers
- Allow: half a day

7. Slow down, naturally
Not every team activity needs a stopwatch. Not in Helsinki. Here, being out in nature is the natural way to unwind. Fill space in the schedule with space to breathe. FRS Finland’s winter trip by ice-strengthened vessel includes an island walk and thin pancakes cooked over an open fire. Redrib retreats to a nature reserve. M/Y Fortune’s fishing charter builds a six-hour day around cruising, fishing, a campfire and sauna.
Best for: nature, food and wellbeing
When: year-round
Allow: 2.5–6 hours
How to fit the archipelago into your event programme
“The archipelago is close enough to become part of the event programme, not a separate excursion. The key is to match the experience to the group, season and time available,” says Mari Viitanen, Senior Advisor, Business Events, Helsinki Convention Bureau.
- Before the event: Welcome delegates with a short sightseeing cruise or dinner on the water.
- During the event: Turn a free afternoon into kayaking, sauna or an island excursion.
- To finish: Close with dinner aboard a charter boat or at an island venue.
Year-round or summer? The archipelago doesn’t close for winter. It just changes character. Summer brings long, light evenings and the widest choice of activities. Colder months bring sauna, survival suit floating, winter kayaking and ice-hardy transport, while several Helsinki islands remain accessible. Please note that snow and safe ice conditions vary from year to year.
