85 years since the sinking of coastal defence ship Ilmarinen

Docent and historian Ville Jalovaara discusses his history book Ilmarinen 1941 – Operaatio Nordwind ja Suomi, published in January 2026.

The Finnish Navy’s flagship, the coastal defence ship Ilmarinen, sank after hitting a mine near the island of Utö on 13 September 1941. 271 crew members lost their lives, and the tragedy was kept secret on Mannerheim’s orders until the autumn of 1945.
